Emergency lighting keeps people safe when the power fails. For Irish businesses it is not optional — it is a legal duty under IS 3217:2023. Here is what you need in place.
What the standard requires
IS 3217:2023 sets out where emergency lighting must be installed, how bright it must be, and how long it must run on battery. Escape routes, exits, stairwells and high-risk areas all need coverage.
- Illuminated exit and directional signage
- Lighting along all escape routes
- Minimum three-hour battery duration
- Regular testing and a kept logbook
Testing and certification
Systems need monthly function tests and an annual full-duration test, all recorded. We install compliant systems and provide same-day certification, plus ongoing testing if you need it.
Why it matters
Beyond compliance, working emergency lighting is what allows people to evacuate safely in a real emergency. It is also one of the first things an insurer or fire officer will check.
